Austria: which destination suits you?

Not every place suits every trip. Here is how the destinations differ, with the hotels we list in each and the guides that narrow the choice further.

Cities2

Vienna

Vienna

12 hotels

Vienna is Austria's grand capital: imperial palaces, opera and concert halls, museums and coffee houses, all within walking distance of the Ringstraße. It suits city breaks in any season, culture lovers and returning visitors, whereas Salzburg is a compact baroque town and Kitzbühel, St. Anton and Zell am See are about mountains, skiing and lakes.

Salzburg

Salzburg

11 hotels

Salzburg is a compact baroque town of Mozart, the summer Festival and Advent markets, with the Alps on the horizon. It suits a long weekend of music and old-town walks, or a few nights before or after the mountains, whereas Vienna is the grand capital and Kitzbühel, St. Anton and Zell am See are about skiing, hiking and lakes.

Countryside3

Kitzbühel

Kitzbühel

12 hotels

Kitzbühel pairs a medieval old town with the KitzSki slopes and the Streif, home of the Hahnenkamm race. It suits skiers who want restaurants and shops on foot after a day on the mountain, and golfers and walkers in summer, whereas St. Anton am Arlberg is for steep, demanding skiing and Zell am See–Kaprun adds a lake and a glacier.

St. Anton am Arlberg

St. Anton am Arlberg

8 hotels

St. Anton am Arlberg is made for keen skiers: high, demanding terrain in Ski Arlberg and lively après-ski in a compact village. It suits confident skiers, groups of friends and couples, whereas Zell am See–Kaprun adds a lake and a glacier, and Vienna and Salzburg are city breaks.

Zell am See–Kaprun

Zell am See–Kaprun

8 hotels

Zell am See–Kaprun pairs two ski areas and a glacier with a lake, so it works in winter and summer alike. It suits families, mixed-ability groups and anyone who wants a spa and a lakeside town, whereas St. Anton is for keen skiers and Vienna and Salzburg are city breaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose the cities for art, music, architecture and coffee houses, and the mountains for skiing, hiking and spa days. Combining the two is easy. Salzburg and Zell am See are about an hour apart by car and a little longer by train, so a few nights in the Altstadt followed by a week by the lake or on the slopes works well. Fast trains link Vienna and Salzburg in around two and a half hours.

In most resorts the lifts run from early December until around Easter or mid-April, and St. Anton often stays open until late April. The Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun usually opens in the autumn and keeps going well into spring, which makes Zell am See–Kaprun a safe bet early and late in the season. Christmas, New Year and the February half-term weeks are the busiest, while January and March are often quieter.

Kitzbühel suits those who want a lively historic town as much as the slopes, with shops, restaurants and varied skiing for confident intermediates. Zell am See–Kaprun works well for families and mixed groups thanks to gentler slopes, the glacier and the lake, which also makes it a summer destination. St. Anton am Arlberg, part of the Ski Arlberg area with Lech and Zürs, is aimed at experienced skiers looking for steep terrain, off-piste and après-ski.

Vienna airport has the widest choice of international flights, while Salzburg and Innsbruck are the closest airports to the ski resorts and see extra flights from the UK in winter. The train is a good alternative once you are on the Continent: fast services run from Munich and other German cities to Salzburg and Innsbruck. Kitzbühel, Zell am See and St. Anton all have railway stations, and many hotels arrange transfers.

Austria uses the euro, and cards are widely accepted, though some mountain huts and smaller cafés still prefer cash. In restaurants it is customary to round up or add around five to ten per cent, and you usually tell the waiter the total you want to pay rather than leaving the money on the table. In hotels, a small tip for housekeeping or the ski room staff is appreciated but not expected.

Spa culture is a big part of the stay, especially in the mountains, where hotels often have extensive sauna areas, relaxation rooms and indoor and outdoor pools. Bear in mind that saunas are usually textile-free. Many mountain hotels have been run by the same family for generations and offer half board, with breakfast and a multi-course dinner included. In Vienna and Salzburg the character comes from history: palaces, antiques, grand cafés and service that is formal yet warm.
