Why this position: Among the three highest guest scores of the 10 hotels we rank here — 9.3 from 498 reviews. Leads the ranking: a higher guest score than #2 (9.3 to 9.2).
Paresa Resort Phuket is built for travellers who want to stay put and look at the sea. It clings to the cliff above Kamala on the Millionaires' Mile coast, and many of its villas and suites have their own infinity pool facing the Andaman Sea. Guests speak most warmly about the staff, whose service they describe as warm and attentive, and about the breakfast, the Thai cooking at Talung Thai and the sense of privacy. The Thai spa and cooking classes round out days that rarely need to leave the hillside. The cliff is also the main trade-off. You cannot walk to the beach, which is about a 7-minute drive away, and moving around the resort involves plenty of stairs. A few guests found the wet tiles slippery. Couples and honeymooners who want seclusion and a pool to themselves will find a calm, polished base; anyone who wants to stroll onto the sand or travels with small children may prefer a beachfront resort.
Why this position: Among the three highest guest scores of the 10 hotels we rank here — 9.2 from 1,306 reviews. Rests on more guest reviews than #1 (1,306 to 498), at a slightly lower score (9.2 to 9.3).
The Shore at Katathani is built for couples who want a villa, a pool and the sea to themselves. The resort climbs the hillside above Kata Noi Beach, and guests keep returning to the same things: a large private pool with a view of the Andaman Sea, villas that feel secluded, and staff who go out of their way. Because it is adults only, the mood stays calm from breakfast to cocktails at The Lighthouse. The resort's layout does have its downsides, however. Getting around depends on buggies, and at busy times the wait can drag. Dining is limited for a longer stay, and some guests found the breakfast and restaurants below the standard of the villas. A few villas also show wear, from paint to air conditioning. Couples who plan to spend their days by their own pool will be very well looked after; those who want variety on the plate should plan some dinners in Kata.
Why this position: Among the three highest guest scores of the 10 hotels we rank here — 9.2 from 692 reviews. The same guest score as #2 (9.2), on a smaller body of reviews (692 to 1,306).
Keemala is for travellers who want the setting to be the point of the trip. The villas sit on a jungle-covered hillside above Kamala, each with its own pool and a terrace looking over the forest towards the Andaman Sea, and their designs, from tree house villas to cage-shaped ones, feel nothing like a standard hotel room. Guests speak most warmly about the staff, the cleanliness and the calm, and the spa with its holistic wellness activities gives the days a gentle rhythm. The same setting brings the trade-offs. Keemala is not on the beach: Kamala Beach is 2 km away and the grounds are hilly, so you depend on the resort's transport and a car for trips to the sea or to Patong. Mosquitoes come with jungle life, and some villa pools sit in shade all day. Couples who want privacy and a spa will find a quiet hideaway; anyone planning a beach holiday should stay closer to the sand.
Why this position: Among the three highest guest scores of the 10 hotels we rank here — 9.3 from 245 reviews. Scores higher than #3 (9.3 to 9.2), on a smaller body of reviews (245 to 692).
Anantara Layan Phuket Resort is made for a slow, restful stay by the sea. It lies at Layan Beach on Phuket's west coast, with two pools, a well-kept garden setting and a spa and wellness centre where guests describe yoga, healing sessions and longevity treatments. The staff are what guests praise most, and the breakfast and the Thai cooking at Dara are close behind, along with how clean and well organised the resort feels. The quiet location is also the main trade-off. Patong Beach is 24 km and Phuket Town 26.4 km away, so a night out means a long drive. Meals and drinks cost more than in local restaurants, the DJ at Zuma can be loud, and a few rooms feel smaller and more dated than the rest. Couples and wellness travellers who plan to stay put will find a calm, polished base; those who want nightlife nearby are better off closer to Patong.
Why this position: Rests on more guest reviews than #4 (1,175 to 245), at a slightly lower score (9.1 to 9.3).
Amatara Welleisure Resort is a place to slow down. Its suites, pavilions and pool villas wrap around the Cape Panwa headland, so the Andaman Sea is in view almost everywhere, and the 55-metre infinity pool seems to spill straight into it. Guests return again and again to the staff, whom they describe as warm and attentive, and to the food, from breakfast to dinner at the Scene restaurant. Wellness programmes, spa treatments and morning activities give the days a gentle rhythm. However, the setting that delivers the views also brings compromises. The beach depends heavily on the tide, so most swimming takes place in the pools. Paths across the headland are steep in places, although buggies run often. The resort is calm to the point of feeling empty for some, and the gym is modest for a wellness address. Couples and anyone in search of rest will find it restorative; travellers who want buzz in the evening should look elsewhere.
Why this position: The same guest score as #5 (9.1), on a smaller body of reviews (721 to 1,175).
Sri Panwa Phuket is for travellers who want a view and a pool of their own. The resort covers 40 acres of rainforest on top of Cape Panwa, and the villas, with infinity pools, sun decks and glass walls, look straight out over the Andaman Sea. Guests speak most warmly about the staff, who are quick and personal, about how clean everything is and about the range of places to eat and drink, from Baba Pool Club to the rooftop bar. The hilltop setting is also the main trade-off. The grounds are steep, so you depend on the buggy service to reach reception and the restaurants, and the airport is 42 km away. Prices in the restaurants are high, and value for money draws the most mixed comments. Couples who plan to stay put will find a secluded, well-run retreat; travellers who want to stroll out to town should look elsewhere.
Why this position: Level with #6 on the guest score (9.1) and on the reviews behind it.
Banyan Tree Phuket is built for travellers who want a villa of their own rather than a room in a block. Each villa in the Laguna Phuket complex at Bang Tao has a private jet pool, Thai art and wood interiors, and outdoor bathing set in lush gardens. Guests keep returning to the same points: generous space, spotless grounds and staff who make the stay feel personal, from the villa hosts to the pool bar. The spa and the lap pool beside it add a calm counterweight to beach days on the Andaman Sea. The trade-offs are about cost and surroundings. Extras, the spa in particular, feel expensive to some guests, and breakfast draws complaints about coffee and the busy egg station. There is little to walk to, and Patong is about 30 minutes away by car. Couples and families after space and quiet will find a polished base; anyone who wants nightlife on foot should look elsewhere.
Why this position: Among the three highest guest scores of the 10 hotels we rank here — 9.2 from 188 reviews. Scores higher than #7 (9.2 to 9.1), on a smaller body of reviews (188 to 666).
The Surin Phuket is built around its beach. The cottages sit among coconut palms on the slope above Pansea Beach, and guests keep coming back to the same points: a clean, quiet bay, warm staff and cottages that feel modern without losing their rustic character. Days revolve around the sand, the pool and the sundeck, where the view over the Andaman Sea is at its best at sunset, and touches such as twice-daily housekeeping and fresh fruit in the room do not go unnoticed. The setting also brings the main trade-off. There are no lifts, only stairs and walkways, which suits some guests better than others. The choice of restaurants is limited for a longer stay, and drinks and the overall price feel steep to some. Patong is about 30 minutes away by car. Couples who want an unhurried beach holiday will be well looked after; anyone who needs step-free access or wants nightlife on the doorstep should look elsewhere.
Why this position: Rests on more guest reviews than #8 (997 to 188), at a slightly lower score (9.0 to 9.2).
The Naka Phuket is for travellers who notice architecture. Its glass-fronted villas look out over the sea at Kamala, and guests talk about waking up to the Andaman Sea through floor-to-ceiling windows, swimming in their own pool and ending the day with a drink at The Nana as the sun sets. The staff are warm and attentive, the villas are large and spotless, and the mood is quiet, yet Patong is only a short ride away. The design does come with trade-offs, however. Not every pool is fully screened from neighbours, and the ground-floor villas miss much of the view. Dining is limited for a longer stay and prices in the restaurant and spa are high, while some villas are ready for a refresh. The beach below is rocky and the centre of Kamala is not within easy walking distance. Couples who want a stylish hideaway with a view will be very happy here; anyone who needs total privacy should ask for an upper-level villa.
Why this position: The same guest score as #9 (9.0), on a smaller body of reviews (787 to 997).
InterContinental Phuket Resort is a full-service beach resort on Kamala Beach, on Phuket's west coast. Guests praise the setting first: palm trees, a beautiful beach and sea views, with several pools, including one on the roof, spread through green gardens. The staff are the other constant in reviews, described as kind and attentive, and the rooms are spotless, with balconies and large, comfortable beds. A spa, a kids' club and family and interconnecting rooms broaden the appeal. The trade-offs are mostly practical. The beach lies across the road, reached through a tunnel and a fair number of steps, and some stairs lack handrails. Sunbeds are often claimed before breakfast, and the breakfast buffet can feel crowded. For couples and families who want a polished, well-run base by the beach, it delivers; travellers with limited mobility should check the layout first.
