Thailand: which destination suits you?

Not every place suits every trip. Here is how the destinations differ, with the hotels we list in each and the guides that narrow the choice further.

Phuket is the place for choice and variety: pool villas, hillside spa resorts and beach hotels along the west coast and on Cape Panwa, with an international airport on the island itself. It suits first-timers, couples and families who want plenty to pick from and a short hop from plane to pool.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on what you want from the trip. For beach and sea, look to the Andaman coast – Phuket for variety, Khao Lak for calm, Krabi for dramatic scenery – or to Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand. Bangkok is the city break, with hotels along the river, while Chiang Mai suits those drawn to culture and mountains. Many travellers combine a few nights in Bangkok with a week on the beach.

The Andaman coast around Phuket, Khao Lak and Krabi is usually driest from roughly November to April, while the southwest monsoon brings more rain from about May to October. Koh Samui follows a different pattern, with its wettest spell coming later, roughly October to December. In the north, Chiang Mai is at its coolest and most comfortable between November and February. If your dates are fixed, choosing the right coast can make a real difference.

Most travellers fly long-haul to Bangkok, and some routes go directly to Phuket. From Bangkok, domestic flights connect to Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai. Khao Lak has no airport of its own and is reached by road from Phuket airport, so allow time for the transfer. Many resorts can arrange a car to meet you on arrival.

The currency is the Thai baht. Cards are widely accepted at hotels and larger restaurants, but cash is handy for markets, taxis and small shops. Hotels often add a service charge to the bill, so check before giving more. Beyond that, small tips for housekeeping, spa therapists or drivers are appreciated but not expected.

Entry rules depend on your passport and can change at short notice. Check the current visa and entry requirements well before you travel, for example with the Thai embassy or your government's official travel advice, and make sure your passport is valid for long enough. Ideally, do this before booking flights that cannot be refunded.

Much of the character lies in the service: staff who remember names and preferences, and a calm, courteous manner that runs through the whole stay. Private pool villas are common at the top end, and spa culture is central, often built around Thai massage and herbal treatments. Many resorts are designed around the landscape, with open-sided pavilions, tropical gardens and views of the sea or rice fields.
