How we chose and ordered the hotels

We checked more than thirty hotels and resorts in and around Hurghada, from El Gouna in the north to Soma Bay in the south. Twelve made the list. They are ordered by guest score, from the highest down; we use the scores for the order only and do not print them.

Where we give a minimum age, it comes from the hotel's own website or, if the hotel publishes none, from the conditions it has set on Booking. Booking was used for that and nothing else. Eleven of the twelve are five-star; Cook's Club El Gouna is a four-star design hotel and is included because it suits a different kind of adults-only stay.

A hotel had to state that it is adults-only on its own website. For La Maison Bleue and Cook's Club, that statement is on El Gouna's official website, which presents the town's hotels. The hotel also had to be closed to guests under 16 or have an explicit adults-only policy for the whole property. Hotels that only set an age limit of 12, 13 or 14, and adults-only pools, wings or clubs inside family resorts, do not count.

Where to stay: town, the southern bays or El Gouna?

Central Hurghada has four of the hotels. Pickalbatros Blu Spa and Steigenberger Pure Lifestyle are on the beach in the El Mamsha El Seyahi area along Village Road, Sunrise Holidays is on Sheraton Road about 500 metres from the town centre, and The Grand Palace is on Corniche Road. The airport is only a few kilometres away, and restaurants and shops are close at hand.

Sahl Hasheesh, a bay south of the city, has Premier Le Reve and KaiSol Romance. Both are self-contained resorts with private beaches, about 22 km from the airport, so you will mostly stay put.

Makadi Bay, further south, has three. JAZ Makadi Star & Spa and Steigenberger Makadi are in the Madinat Makadi development, and The Makadi Spa Hotel is on the beach with a reef offshore. It is around 30 km from the airport. Steigenberger Makadi, however, sits on a golf course rather than the sand, with a shuttle bus to the beach.

El Gouna, north of Hurghada, is a lagoon town with its own marina, Abu Tig. La Maison Bleue, Casa Cook and Cook's Club are all here, and the town's restaurants and bars make eating out easy. The airport is about 27–30 km away.

Hotels we reviewed but left out

  • Cleopatra Luxury Resort Makadi Bay — an adults-only section inside a family resort with a kids club.
  • Baron Palace Sahl Hasheesh — separate areas for families and adults within one resort.
  • Sunrise Tucana Resort Grand Select — a family resort with a kids club; only its pool club is 16+.
  • SRNTY Sahl Hasheesh — a family hotel where only some swim-up rooms are for adults.
  • The Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh — accepts children.
  • The Chedi El Gouna and Kempinski Hotel Soma Bay — calm and upmarket, but they welcome children.
  • Meraki Resort — adults-only from 16, but a party-themed resort outside the luxury segment we cover.
  • Three Corners Ocean View El Gouna — adults-only, but below our guest-score floor.
  • Villa Coconut El Gouna — adults-only, but not yet open.

A pattern worth knowing: many of Hurghada's big resorts advertise an adults-only pool, wing or club while running a kids club next door. We only count hotels where the whole property is for adults.
