How we analyse guest reviews

On our hotel pages and ranked lists you'll see figures like “92 of 92 mentions of the food are positive”. This page explains exactly how those figures are produced — so you can judge for yourself what they are worth.

Where the reviews come from

For every hotel we collect the most recently available guest reviews from Booking.com and Google and store them in our own database. The count stated next to an analysis — for example “1,200 reviews from the 12 hotels” — is the sum of stored reviews actually read, and the harvest month is always shown alongside.

How mentions are counted

Each review is read and every mention is assigned to one of eight categories: food, rooms, pool and beach, service, location, condition and cleanliness, noise, and value for money. Each mention is judged positive, negative or mixed. “92 of 92 positive about the food” therefore means: of the stored reviews that mention the food, all 92 were positive. We count per review — a guest who mentions the food five times counts once.

What we publish

A category is written up on the hotel page only once it has at least three mentions — below that the evidence is too thin. Quotes are reproduced verbatim from a real stored review and are never translated. Negative mentions are always reported: a hotel with recurring noise complaints gets that in print, however high its score.

How often the analysis is refreshed

Analyses are redone when new reviews are harvested, and the date of the latest harvest is always shown next to the figures. The Booking and Google scores displayed alongside are fetched continuously and can therefore be newer than the analysis data.

Limitations — what these figures are not

The counts reflect the reviews we had stored at harvest time, not everything ever written about the hotel. Sources can contain duplicates, and the sample is the most recent reviews — not a random sample over time. The figures are a current snapshot, not a complete history. Hotels never pay to be included in the analysis and cannot influence the outcome.
