Frequently Asked Questions

Stay in or close to the old centre so you can see it all on foot. Hotel Harmony, in Patershol 100 metres from the Gravensteen, and Hotel Cour Saint Georges by CW Hotel Collection, on Hoogpoort near the Belfry, put the Graslei, the Korenlei and St Bavo's Cathedral within a few minutes' walk. Ghent Urbanist Hotel by Harmony, just north on Augustijnenkaai, is a slightly calmer alternative by the water.

It depends on the trip you want. Bruges is smaller and very romantic, but it fills with day-trippers and grows quiet in the evenings. Ghent is a lively university city with medieval quays, a wider choice of bars and restaurants and a centre that stays busy after dark. The two are about half an hour apart by train, so many travellers base themselves in Ghent and visit Bruges for the day.

Most visitors fly into Brussels Airport and take the train to Gent-Sint-Pieters, the main station, either directly or with a change in Brussels. From London, the Eurostar runs to Brussels-Midi, where you change for Ghent. From Gent-Sint-Pieters, trams run into the centre, and Yalo Urban Boutique Hotel Gent has trams right outside. Driving is possible, but much of the centre is car-free, so check parking with your hotel first.

ONE TWO FOUR - Hotel & Spa has a spa with a sauna, steam room and hammam that guests reserve privately in one-hour slots; book early, as they fill up fast. Pillows Grand Boutique Hotel Reylof Ghent has an indoor wellness pool, a sauna and a fitness centre. Hotel Harmony has a heated outdoor pool that guests use free of charge. The other three hotels have no pool.

The Ghent Festivities, or Gentse Feesten, are a free street festival of music, theatre and street performance that takes over the old centre for ten days in July. It is one of the liveliest times to be in Ghent, but hotels book up early and the streets around Patershol, the Vrijdagmarkt and the Korenmarkt stay loud late into the night. If you want calm, pick other dates or a hotel south or west of the centre.

Spring and early autumn are often the most pleasant, with mild weather and fewer visitors than in high summer. July and August bring long evenings on the quays, along with the Gentse Feesten in July. In December the old town has a Christmas market and festive lights, although the days are short and often grey. Rain is possible in any month and the cobbles get slippery, so pack sturdy shoes.

Ghent Urbanist Hotel by Harmony, Yalo Urban Boutique Hotel Gent and Hotel Harmony all have family rooms, and Yalo's restaurant offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. ONE TWO FOUR - Hotel & Spa, with its private spa hour, and Pillows Grand Boutique Hotel Reylof Ghent, with its fireside lounge and courtyard garden, are made for couples. Hotel Cour Saint Georges by CW Hotel Collection suits couples who value personal touches, though some rooms are small.
