Frequently Asked Questions

The old town is the easiest base. Hotel De Witte Lelie -Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Hotel Julien and Sapphire House Antwerp, Autograph Collection are a short walk from the Grote Markt, the Cathedral of Our Lady and the Rubens House, with the Scheldt and the Meir close by. Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp - The Leading Hotels of the World, by the botanical garden, is a little further south but still an easy walk from both.

Choose the old town if you want the sights, the shops and the river on foot, and a full hotel with staff on hand. Het Zuid, south of the centre, is a calmer 19th-century district of wide streets, cafés and museums. Quartier Le Sud is the option there: bright, well-equipped apartments with kitchens but no restaurant or bar, which suits longer stays and travellers who like to cook for themselves and live like locals.

Antwerp is known for its fashion designers. The Meir is the main shopping street with the big names, while independent boutiques and Belgian labels cluster in the streets around Nationalestraat, home to the fashion museum MoMu. Het Zuid adds galleries and interior shops, and the diamond quarter lies beside Antwerpen-Centraal. Sapphire House and Botanic Sanctuary are both close to the Meir, and Hotel Julien shows off Belgian design in its own interiors.

From the UK, the Eurostar takes you to Brussels, and from there trains reach Antwerpen-Centraal in about 40 minutes. If you fly, Brussels Airport also has direct trains to Antwerp. Antwerpen-Centraal, with its grand domed hall, is a sight in itself and lies within walking distance of the hotels in the centre, with the zoo right next door. If you drive, the centre is a low-emission zone, so check the rules for your car before you set off.

Only Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp - The Leading Hotels of the World has a pool: an indoor pool in its Health & Spa Club, which also has a fitness centre and is one of the things guests praise most. Hotel Julien has a spa in 16th-century cellars with a sauna, steam bath and rain shower. Sapphire House Antwerp, Autograph Collection has a fitness centre but no pool, and Hotel De Witte Lelie and Quartier Le Sud have no spa.

Antwerp is the largest and most urban of the three, with fashion, the port, Rubens and a lively food and bar scene. Ghent is a lively university city whose medieval quays fill up in the evening, while Bruges is a small, romantic canal town that is at its calmest early and late, once the day-trippers have left. Ghent and Bruges are both easy day trips by train, so you can base yourself in Antwerp and see all three.

Couples tend to choose Hotel De Witte Lelie for its garden terrace and personal service, Hotel Julien for its design and roof terrace, or Botanic Sanctuary for a spa weekend. Families get more space at Quartier Le Sud, where the apartments have kitchens, though the stairs are steep. Botanic Sanctuary, Hotel Julien and Sapphire House also offer family rooms, and the zoo beside Antwerpen-Centraal makes an easy outing with children.
