Belgium: which destination suits you?

Not every place suits every trip. Here is how the destinations differ, with the hotels we list in each and the guides that narrow the choice further.

Cities4

Bruges

Bruges

18 hotels

Bruges is the small, romantic choice: a medieval canal town you can cross on foot, at its best overnight once the day-trippers have gone home. It suits couples and slow weekends, whereas Brussels is the capital of the Grand-Place, the EU quarter and Art Nouveau, Antwerp the port city of fashion, diamonds and Rubens, and Ghent a lively university city with medieval quays.

Brussels

Brussels

9 hotels

Brussels is Belgium's capital and its most varied base: the Grand-Place, Art Nouveau houses, major museums and the EU institutions, with fast trains to the rest of the country. It suits a first trip to Belgium and business travellers, whereas Bruges is a small, romantic canal town, Antwerp is about fashion, diamonds and Rubens, and Ghent is a lively university city on medieval quays.

Ghent

Ghent

6 hotels

Ghent is Belgium's lively university city, with medieval quays along the Graslei and Korenlei and evenings that stay busy long after the day-trippers have gone. It suits couples who want history with everyday city life around it: smaller than Brussels, less polished and less crowded than Bruges, and without Antwerp's port-and-fashion bustle.

Antwerp

Antwerp

5 hotels

Antwerp is Belgium's port city of fashion, diamonds and Rubens, with a compact old town, a grand railway station and a lively food scene. It suits shopping weekends and design-minded couples, whereas Brussels is the capital of the Grand-Place, the EU quarter and Art Nouveau, Bruges a small, romantic canal town and Ghent a lively university city on medieval quays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bruges is the easiest choice if you want the classic picture of canals, cobbled lanes and medieval squares, and it works especially well for a romantic weekend. Brussels suits those who want a capital with large museums, the Grand-Place and a broad restaurant scene. With three or four nights, you can base yourself in one and visit the other by train. Ghent is a good alternative to Bruges if you prefer a livelier, less touristy atmosphere.

Yes, easily. Trains run frequently between the four cities: Brussels to Ghent takes around half an hour, Brussels to Antwerp less than an hour, Ghent to Bruges around half an hour and Brussels to Bruges about an hour. Many travellers split a stay between two cities, such as Brussels and Bruges, or use Ghent as a central base. In Bruges and Ghent the station is a short bus or tram ride from the old town.

Spring, from April to June, brings longer days, blossom in the parks and terraces opening up, which makes it a pleasant time for walking between the sights. From late November to early January, Christmas markets and winter lights fill the squares in Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp, so book early for December weekends. Summer is the busiest season in Bruges, and Ghent fills up during the Gentse Feesten in July. Rain is possible at any time of year.

Eurostar runs directly from London St Pancras to Brussels-Midi in around two hours, and connecting trains continue to Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp. From Paris and Amsterdam, the high-speed trains once known as Thalys now run as Eurostar to Brussels, and trains from Amsterdam also stop in Antwerp. If you fly, Brussels Airport has its own railway station, with trains into the city in around twenty minutes and onward connections to the other cities.

It depends on the city. In Brussels the choice is mostly between classic five-star hotels with full service, restaurants and in some cases a spa. In Bruges, small boutique hotels in historic houses along the canals set the tone, alongside a couple of five-star hotels and several adults-only options. Antwerp has both. Ghent has no five-star hotel, but four-star boutique hotels such as Hotel Harmony offer a pool and a personal welcome. Choose five-star for facilities, boutique for character.

Belgium uses the euro, and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Service is included in restaurant and hotel bills, so tipping is not expected, although many people round up or leave a little extra for good service. Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp lie in Dutch-speaking Flanders, while Brussels is officially bilingual and French is what you hear most on the street. English is widely understood in hotels and restaurants.
