Frequently Asked Questions

St. Moritz Dorf is the easiest base, with shops, restaurants and the railway station close by. Badrutt's Palace Hotel and Hotel Grace La Margna St. Moritz both stand on Via Serlas there, and from the latter you can walk to the station. St. Moritz Bad, by the lake, is quieter and suits a spa stay, with Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski and Sport & Wellness Hotel San Gian.

The winter season usually runs from late November or early December until around Easter, with Christmas, New Year and February the busiest weeks. None of these hotels is described as ski-in/ski-out. Sport & Wellness Hotel San Gian is closest to the slopes, 150 metres from the Signal cable car up to Corviglia. Badrutt's Palace Hotel runs a free shuttle to the Corvatsch cable car, and Hotel Maistra 160 sells ski passes at the hotel.

Grand Hotel Kronenhof works well for families, with family rooms, two pools and a spa, and one guest called it ideal for a family holiday. Badrutt's Palace Hotel, Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski and Sport & Wellness Hotel San Gian also have family rooms. Couples often choose Hotel Grace La Margna St. Moritz for its personal service and comfortable rooms, or Hotel Maistra 160 in Pontresina for its calm and its fragrant stone-pine rooms.

Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski has a 2,800 m² spa with a heated indoor pool and several saunas. Badrutt's Palace Hotel and Grand Hotel Kronenhof each have two pools and a spa, and Hotel Grace La Margna St. Moritz has an indoor pool and hot tub. Hotel Maistra 160 has an outdoor pool, sauna and yoga studio, while guests at Sport & Wellness Hotel San Gian use the public Ovaverva pool and spa across the street free of charge.

Winter, from around December to Easter, is the main season, with often sunny days on the slopes and events on the frozen lake. Summer, roughly June to September, brings hiking, mountain biking and walks along the lakes of the Upper Engadine, and at around 1,800 metres the evenings stay cool. Spring and late autumn are quiet, and many hotels close for a few weeks, so check opening dates before you book.

Most visitors fly to Zurich and continue by train, changing in Chur for the scenic mountain line up to the Engadine; the whole journey takes around three and a half hours. The Glacier Express links St. Moritz with Zermatt on a panoramic ride that takes most of a day, and nearby Engadin Airport at Samedan serves private flights. Badrutt's Palace Hotel, Hotel Grace La Margna St. Moritz, Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski and Grand Hotel Kronenhof offer an airport shuttle.

Pontresina is a separate, quieter village in the same valley, about 5–7 km from St. Moritz. Grand Hotel Kronenhof and Hotel Maistra 160 are both there, with mountain views, and from Kronenhof you look out over the Bernina glaciers. It suits travellers who prefer calm evenings and is well placed for Diavolezza, but the shops and restaurants of St. Moritz are a train, bus or car ride away rather than on the doorstep.
