Switzerland: which destination suits you?

Not every place suits every trip. Here is how the destinations differ, with the hotels we list in each and the guides that narrow the choice further.

Cities3

Zurich

Zurich

14 hotels

Zurich is Switzerland's finance city on its lake: Bahnhofstrasse, an old town on the Limmat and grand hotels by the water, all within walking distance of each other. It suits city breaks, shoppers and rail travellers, whereas Geneva is French-speaking, Lucerne pairs its old town with lake and mountain resorts, and Zermatt and St. Moritz are all about skiing.

Geneva

Geneva

13 hotels

Geneva is Switzerland's French-speaking lakeside city: grand hotels line the quays facing the Jet d'Eau, the Old Town rises on the left bank and the airport is only minutes away. It suits city breaks, business trips and longer stays in serviced apartments, whereas Zurich is the finance city, Lucerne pairs its old town with lake and mountain resorts, and Zermatt and St. Moritz are all about skiing.

Lucerne

Lucerne

11 hotels

Lucerne pairs a compact old town on the Reuss with Lake Lucerne and resort hotels high above the water, so one trip gives you both city strolls and mountain views. It suits couples and first-time visitors, whereas Zurich is the finance city, Geneva is French-speaking, and Zermatt and St. Moritz are all about skiing.

Countryside2

Zermatt

Zermatt

15 hotels

Zermatt is a car-free mountain village beneath the Matterhorn, with skiing that reaches into Italy in winter and hiking in summer, so it suits skiers, hikers and couples who want Alpine views. Zurich and Geneva are lakeside cities, Lucerne pairs an old town with lake resorts, and St. Moritz brings Engadine glamour.

St. Moritz

St. Moritz

6 hotels

St. Moritz is the Engadine's glamorous ski resort: Belle Époque palace hotels, a frozen lake in winter and skiing on Corviglia, Corvatsch and Diavolezza, with lakeside walks and hiking in summer. It suits skiers who want style and spa time alongside the slopes, whereas Zermatt is a car-free village under the Matterhorn, Zurich and Geneva are lakeside cities and Lucerne pairs its old town with lake resorts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose Zurich, Geneva or Lucerne for lakes, old towns, museums and shopping, and Zermatt or St. Moritz for skiing, hiking and mountain scenery. Combining them is easy by train. Zurich and Lucerne are less than an hour apart, so a few nights in each works well, and from Geneva you can reach Zermatt in around three and a half hours, changing in Visp. Lucerne also makes a good base for excursions up Pilatus or Rigi.

In Zermatt and St. Moritz the main season usually runs from late November or early December until around Easter, and Zermatt often keeps going into late April or early May. Zermatt also has glacier skiing on the Klein Matterhorn, which stays open in summer too. Christmas, New Year and the February half-term weeks are the busiest, while January and March tend to be quieter. In summer both resorts switch to hiking and mountain biking.

Zermatt suits those who want the Matterhorn on the doorstep, a car-free village and extensive high-altitude skiing, including runs across the border to Cervinia in Italy. It appeals to keen skiers, hikers and climbers. St. Moritz is more about style: Belle Époque grand hotels, smart shops, events on the frozen lake and varied skiing on Corviglia, Corvatsch and Diavolezza. Pontresina, next door in the same valley, is a quieter base.

Zurich and Geneva are the main airports, with frequent flights from the UK, and both have their own railway stations. From there the Swiss rail network takes over, so you can be in Lucerne, Zermatt or St. Moritz the same day. The Glacier Express links Zermatt and St. Moritz on a panoramic journey through the Alps that takes most of a day. In Zermatt, drivers leave the car in Täsch and continue by shuttle train.

Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF), not the euro. Euros are often accepted in hotels, shops and at railway stations, but change is given in francs and the exchange rate is usually less favourable, so paying by card or in francs is simpler. Service is included in restaurant and hotel prices, so tipping is not expected. Many people round up the bill or leave a little extra for particularly good service.

Many are historic palace hotels from the Belle Époque, built when the Alps and the lakes became fashionable with travellers, and some are still family-owned. The views are part of the experience, from balconies over Lake Geneva and Lake Lucerne to rooms facing the Matterhorn. Spa is another strength: large spa areas with indoor and outdoor pools are common, for example at The Dolder Grand, Bürgenstock and in the mountain resorts. Service tends to be polished and discreet.

For many travellers it is, as long as you go with the right expectations. Switzerland is expensive, and that shows in hotels, food and transport alike. In return you get punctual trains, lakes and mountains within short distances of each other, and hotels with long traditions. If the budget is tight, a shorter stay in one city combined with day trips by train gives a good taste of the country. Travelling outside the peak weeks also helps.
