Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa
Lucerne, Switzerland
Best overallBürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa suits travellers who want Lake Lucerne as the view itself rather than a backdrop to city sightseeing… The hotel sits on the piazza of the Bürgenstock Resort, 500 metres above the water on the Bürgenberg ridge, so the lake and the mountains of Central Switzerland fill the windows and terraces. Guests keep coming back to three things: the spa, the views and the staff, who are described as warm, attentive and well informed. The breakfast and the resort's restaurants also earn steady praise, and couples and families settle in easily. The trade-offs are cost and distance. Prices run high across the resort, and a few guests found their room smaller than expected. Reaching Lucerne means the funicular and then a boat across the lake, which is part of the charm but takes planning. If you want long spa days above the lake, this is a natural fit; if you want to stroll into the Altstadt every evening, stay in town.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 11 hotels we rank here — 9.5 from 1,092 reviews. Leads the ranking on the weight of evidence: 1,092 reviews to #2's 305, although #2 scores higher (9.6 to 9.5).

Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern
Lucerne, Switzerland
Spa & wellnessMandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern suits travellers who want the city on the doorstep and a hotel that takes care of the details… It sits on Haldenstrasse along the lakefront promenade, so the Altstadt is an easy walk along the water, and the lake-view rooms with balconies are what guests remember most. Reviews return again and again to the staff, who come across as warm and professional, and to rooms that are spotless and finished to a high standard. What the Palace does not have is a pool, and although the lake lies just across the promenade, there is no private lake access or bathing area. Wellness is limited to the spa and wellness centre with its sauna, steam room and fitness room. Small grumbles, such as a missing full-length mirror, barely dent the impression. Couples and city-break travellers who spend their days exploring Lucerne will find a refined, well-run base; anyone hoping for lazy days by a pool should look further out along the lake.
Why this position
Highest guest score of the 11 hotels we rank here — 9.6 from 305 reviews. Scores higher than #1 (9.6 to 9.5), on a smaller body of reviews (305 to 1,092).

Hotel Villa Honegg
Lucerne, Switzerland
Hotel Villa Honegg is built around one view… The early-1900s villa stands high on the Bürgenstock above Ennetbürgen, and its heated infinity pool looks straight out over Lake Lucerne, which guests describe as the highlight of their stay. The rooms were renovated in 2011 and come with balconies, leather armchairs and soft beige tones, while the spa, the pool and the caring staff draw steady praise. Many guests come to mark something, whether an engagement, an anniversary or a birthday, and one couple found a cake waiting for them. The setting is also the limitation. The villa is out of the way, although the hotel drives guests to the nearest bus stop. Prices are high, with dinner singled out as poor value, and one guest found the portions small and the menu short. For a few quiet days with a pool and a view, it is a lovely choice; if you plan to explore Lucerne every day, a hotel in the city is easier.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 11 hotels we rank here — 9.4 from 369 reviews. Rests on more guest reviews than #2 (369 to 305), at a slightly lower score (9.4 to 9.6).

Park Hotel Vitznau
Lucerne, Switzerland
BeachPark Hotel Vitznau puts you right at the water's edge… It stands on the shore of Lake Lucerne in Vitznau, with its own private beach area and surroundings that guests call deeply relaxing. Since the renovation in 2012 and 2013, every suite and residence has been individually designed, and the large spa, with indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam baths and an ice grotto, is a big part of the appeal. Guests praise the service as personal and generous; one birthday stay even brought an upgrade to a suite. The criticisms are small but specific. Some guests found the restaurant menu limited, one felt a waiter was inattentive at dinner, and rooms with two single beds can feel narrow. The size of the showers and their doors also drew a comment. For a lakeside spa stay with a strong sense of privacy, Vitznau is an easy choice; if you want the restaurants and evening life of the city, stay in Lucerne itself.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 11 hotels we rank here — 9.4 from 266 reviews. The same guest score as #3 (9.4), on a smaller body of reviews (266 to 369).

Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern
Lucerne, Switzerland
Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern is a natural choice for travellers who want to see Lucerne on foot… It stands on Schweizerhofquai beside the lake, so the Altstadt and the Chapel Bridge are only minutes away, and KKL Luzern and the train station are about a 10-minute walk. Guests praise the friendly, helpful staff, the restaurants with their indoor and outdoor tables, and rooms with lake views that many describe as amazing. The family-owned house also has a story to tell: each room is furnished around a musician, writer or actor who has stayed here. The trade-offs are modest. A few guests find parts of the hotel a little dated, and housekeeping does not always catch the small details. Wellness is limited to a spa area and a fitness centre, with no pool. For a city break built around walking, concerts and dinners in town, the Schweizerhof is a well-placed base with plenty of character.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #4 (662 to 266), at a slightly lower score (9.3 to 9.4).

Waldhotel by Bürgenstock
Lucerne, Switzerland
ViewsWaldhotel by Bürgenstock is the quieter way to stay in the Bürgenstock Resort… It sits 450 metres above Lake Lucerne on the Bürgenberg ridge, in a building designed by Matteo Thun, and guests describe the mood as cosy and relaxing rather than grand. The views are the constant theme; one guest even preferred the valley-facing side to the lake view. Staff are praised as friendly, professional and helpful, and the resort's restaurants and bars give plenty of choice for dinner, with the hotel's own menus borrowing from its Persian, Asian and French kitchens. The downsides are the familiar Bürgenstock ones. Guests repeatedly call the stay expensive, including at the spa, and reaching Lucerne from up on the ridge takes time. One evening at the Verbena restaurant also brought a long wait between courses. If you want calm, views and a spa with the whole resort on your doorstep, it works well; for days spent in the city, look closer to the Altstadt.
Why this position
Sits behind #5 on both the score (9.2 to 9.3) and the sample it rests on (473 to 662 reviews).

Grand Hotel National Luzern
Lucerne, Switzerland
Grand Hotel National Luzern is for travellers who love the feel of a classic grand hotel… Dating from the 1870s, it stands directly on the lakeshore along Haldenstrasse, a short walk from the train station and the Altstadt, and many of its rooms and suites look straight out over Lake Lucerne. Guests rave about those views, about the location and about staff who go out of their way, and they describe large, spotless suites with comfortable beds. The National Bar, with its musical entertainment, is a favourite place to end the evening. The facilities are where opinions split. There is an indoor pool and a spa and wellness area, but no gym, and some guests expect more from a five-star hotel. Breakfast service can also be slow, with long waits before orders are taken. Those who come for the setting, the rooms and an evening in the bar will be happy here; anyone who wants a proper workout during the stay should look elsewhere.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #6 (519 to 473), at a slightly lower score (8.9 to 9.2).

Hotel Pilatus-Kulm
Lucerne, Switzerland
Affordable luxuryHotel Pilatus-Kulm offers something no lakeside hotel can: a night at the summit of Mount Pilatus… The historic mountain hotel dates from 1890 and was completely renovated in 2010, and all of its 27 superior doubles and 3 junior suites look out over the Alpine panorama. Guests talk above all about the sunrise and sunset, the clear night sky and the moment the day visitors leave and the mountain goes quiet; one even spotted ibex near the hotel. Dinner is a highlight, the staff are friendly and professional from reception to restaurant, and guests mention clean rooms with a large bathroom. The summit also has practical drawbacks. Arriving with heavy luggage is hard work, the mountain is busy with day visitors until they head down, and there is nowhere to buy water or snacks late at night. Opinions on breakfast are mixed. For a memorable night above Lucerne, with trails close by at dawn, it works beautifully; as a base for exploring the city, it does not.
Why this position
Scores higher than #7 (9.3 to 8.9), on a smaller body of reviews (441 to 519).

Hotel des Balances
Lucerne, Switzerland
Hotel des Balances is for travellers who want to step straight out into the old town… The hotel occupies a former guild hall on the Reuss, in the heart of the Altstadt, and most rooms look out over the Chapel Bridge, the Jesuit Church or Weinmarkt square. Location is the word that comes up in almost every review, closely followed by the staff, whom guests describe as friendly and excellent. Rooms are called stylish and comfortable, and the food at Restaurant La Balance, with its terrace by the river, earns warm praise. There is little to criticise. Service at breakfast can be uneven, and some guests found their room too warm even with the cooling on. There is no spa or pool, so this is a hotel for exploring rather than lounging. As a base for walking the old town, crossing the bridges and dining by the water, it is a convenient choice full of character.
Why this position
The largest body of guest feedback on this page: 1,222 reviews, averaging 9.1. Rests on more guest reviews than #8 (1,222 to 441), at a slightly lower score (9.1 to 9.3).

Gasthaus Badhof
Lucerne, Switzerland
GolfGasthaus Badhof suits travellers who would rather wake up to open views than to city streets… The hotel stands beside the golf course in Meggen, just east of Lucerne, and its rooms look out across the fairways and Lake Lucerne to the Alps. Guests describe the setting as calm and the views as breathtaking, and they praise the very spacious, spotless rooms, the welcoming reception staff and the food in the restaurant. The old town is about 4 km away, with bus stops close by and free parking for those who arrive by car. The Badhof runs more like a country inn than a full-service hotel. Breakfast choice is limited, the reception and kitchen close in the evening, and the toiletries are basic. Golfers, couples and drivers who want a quiet base for days on the lake, the Rigi or the Bürgenstock will find plenty of space and scenery; those who expect round-the-clock service are better off in the city centre.
Why this position
The same guest score as #9 (9.1), on a smaller body of reviews (582 to 1,222).

Art Deco Hotel Montana Luzern
Lucerne, Switzerland
DesignArt Deco Hotel Montana Luzern is all about the view… The hotel sits on the slope above the lakefront, high enough for its rooms and terrace to take in Lake Lucerne, the city and the Alps in one sweep, and a funicular carries guests down to the lakeside promenade. Reviews are full of superlatives about that panorama, and guests also praise the stylish rooms, the terrace for evening drinks and service described as exceptional. The penthouse rooms and suites on the top floors add more lavish furnishings and extra service. The weak spot is breakfast, which some guests find limited and below the standard of the rest of the stay. Small details such as thin towels and the lack of an iron also come up. The hotel holds four stars, yet some guests feel it delivers well beyond that. Couples and design lovers who want to wake up to the lake will enjoy it; anyone who looks forward to a lavish breakfast spread should keep expectations in check.
Why this position
Sits behind #10 on both the score (9.0 to 9.1) and the sample it rests on (450 to 582 reviews).
