Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews
Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 8 October 2026 · How we review hotels
Spinguera Ecolodge is for travellers who come to Boa Vista for space and silence rather than resort life. The old village in Espingueira, abandoned in the 1970s and 80s and restored as a lodge in 2007, stands alone in a nature reserve between desert and ocean, with nine rooms and three villas in local stone. Guests return again and again to the same points: the quiet, the tastefully decorated stone cottages, staff who arrange transport, walks and excursions, and a dinner menu that changes every day and is built on fresh, local produce. The flip side of that seclusion is access and comfort. The lodge sits at the end of a rocky track, the free shuttle to Sal Rei runs only three days a week, and most guests recommend renting a car, preferably a 4x4. There is no beach right by the lodge where you can comfortably swim, the rooms have no air conditioning or TV, and there is no mobile signal. Anyone who wants to disconnect, walk and eat well will find a calm, well-run retreat; travellers who want beach bars and nightlife are better off near Sal Rei.
What Guests Loved
- The lodge stands alone in the Parque Natural do Norte, with the desert behind it and the Atlantic in front. Guests keep describing the silence, broken only by wind, waves and birds, and the goats and donkeys that pass in the morning, as the reason they came and the reason they would return.
- The team is praised in almost every review as kind, attentive and multilingual. Guests mention help with transport, hiking tips and excursions arranged at short notice, and several name the owner and individual staff members.
Things to Consider
- The lodge is reached on a long, rocky dirt track, and many guests advise renting a car, ideally a 4x4, to explore the island. The free shuttle to Sal Rei runs only three days a week, so without a car, outings depend on taxis or excursions, which some guests found costly.
- The coast in front of the lodge is wild, and several guests point out that there is no beach nearby where you can comfortably swim in the sea; footpaths lead down to the beaches. One guest found the shore close to the lodge littered, and others missed shade in the outdoor seating areas.
