Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews

Set within a converted 14th-century convent, San Domenico Palace overlooks the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna from its cliffside position in Taormina. The property balances its deep monastic history with modern Mediterranean elegance, making it an ideal choice for culturally inclined travelers and those seeking a refined retreat.
  • The property occupies a restored Dominican convent dating to 1374, maintaining original frescoes, cloisters, and limestone corridors. This heritage provides a quiet, monastic atmosphere that distinguishes the hotel from purpose-built modern luxury resorts.
  • Positioned on a rocky promontory, the hotel offers a direct line of sight to the volcanic peaks of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. Guests can observe the volcano from several vantage points, including private balconies and communal terraces.

I booked a table at Rocco, very nice restaurant but very poor service/food. We ordered two plates of pasta and a bottle of water and wanted to get a desert as well, the manager comes up and tells us « its not enough there is a minimum charge of 100 euros per person ». This was not specified anywhere when we booked, its really unethical. We decided to keep the same order but continue with drinks later at the lounge to pay the required 200 euros… In terms of food quality, its good but not on the level of a palace… the same pasta could be found in a good italian restaurant anywhere in the world. In short, we expected a better experience but were not dissappointed by the architecture and interior design, truly amazing.

Just spent a week and wish we never had to leave. This property is magical and unforgettable. The views, the gardens, location, and the service were beyond our expectations. The staff is so quick to respond to any needs or questions. Some staff to recognize for their stellar service: Elenora at the front desk, Frederica, Alesso, and Lorenzo at the pool, Leonardo and Alessandro at the bar, Francesco at breakfast service. Even the doormen out front who greeted us by name every time we returned to property and make it feel so safe and secure. Marco on the piano and all the live music. We will truly miss seeing you all every day. This property offers so many ‘surprises’ in the bar with your drinks, by the pool each day, and gifts in your room. It was all such an extra special touch. I’ve not been to another property that does this. Housekeeping around the property and in the room could not have been any more immaculate. Everything the hotel arranged like the cooking class in a local home with host Louisa and Chef Elvira - so special and something we could never forget, big highlight of our trip, concierge also coordinated a yacht rental with Captain Carmelo and Skipper Lovely was excellent. If you are thinking of booking this for a family vacation, a romantic getaway, truly anyone will have the best time here. There’s just so much more I could go on and on about. Bravo and 5 stars all around.

We stayed here for two days for our honeymoon and here is my experience: 1. The location of this hotel is amazing if you want to explore Taormina. This is your place. It's very accessible and the breakfast spread is unbelievable. The taste of the breakfast is amazing and the service is, of course, amazing. The views are really really great. 2. When it comes to beach and pool access, they only have one pool that is mixed. They don't have an adult pool and they also don't have beach access, so if you're looking for a beach experience I don't recommend this hotel. They also don't have really nice easy ways to go to other beaches. 3. They have a lot of different dinner options, which is great. We also did a dinner here and really really liked that dinner experience too. 4. When it comes to rooms, they are good but even if they upgraded us, the room that we stayed in was actually quite small. It was not the best Four Seasons room that I ever stayed in so I was expecting something better. This place was a monastery so it has a really big history and historical vibes. As you know, this is a White Lotus hotel, which is why there are a lot of guests coming in. It's really really popular. The amenities are, of course, amazing and the service is great. Overall my experience was good but not, like, okay. It's not an unbelievable experience. I think we stayed in better Four Seasons as well. Overall I think you should stay here once but I wouldn't come back necessarily.

Excellent stay, room was well equipped and enjoyed the treats such as caps/ tote/ items given by the pool. Service was world class, staff were very attentive but always friendly. We ate at the Michelin restaurant which was delicious and also made menu adjustments for my wife. Great hotel in a great location. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful stay. The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming, and even remembered our names, which made the experience feel very personal. They also prepared a lovely cake and special cushions for my birthday celebration, which was such a thoughtful touch. The only small downside was that no one asked about pillow preferences in advance, and I forgot to request one myself, so I didn’t sleep very well. But overall, the service and stay were excellent.
