Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews
Set within a meticulously restored 19th-century convent, Hospes Amérigo balances historic architecture with refined, minimalist design in Alicante’s old town. The property features a sophisticated rooftop pool and three distinct dining venues, making it a compelling choice for cultural travelers seeking an urban retreat near the Mediterranean coast.
What Guests Loved
- The hotel is housed in a former 19th-century convent, retaining historic elements like high ceilings and stone arches. These original features are paired with contemporary artwork, creating a restrained atmosphere that honors the building's religious heritage.
- The rooftop level houses a swimming pool and a wellness center overlooking the city skyline. This elevated position provides a direct line of sight to the medieval Santa Bárbara Castle, offering a quiet escape from the urban center.
Things to Consider
- Because the structure follows the original convent layout, several rooms face inward toward the central courtyard. While these spaces are notably quiet, they lack the expansive window views and direct sunlight found in the exterior-facing suites.
- The central position in the historic district means that the surrounding pedestrian streets are popular destinations. While the building is well-insulated, some ambient sound from nearby social venues may be audible in lower-floor rooms during weekend evenings.

“I would give this place 3 stars overall. The location is fantastic. It is nice to have the rooftop pool. Our air conditioning was broken for the first 2 days and the hotel did not communicate updates very well. This is the difference between a 4/5 star and a 3 star. Service was okay. Not super friendly. The room layout is kind of strange. You enter the room into the sink and shower area, then through a sliding door to the bed area. The bed was 2 singles pushed together, so falling into the gap was a pain. Not sure what other Alicante hotels are like. Perhaps this is better than most? Also- they could do better advertising that they part of the Marriott family.”

“This hotel is absolutely delightful and one of the best Marriott umbrella experiences I’ve ever had! From the moment I walked into the gorgeous lobby and was given a welcome cava, my stay was everything (and more!) you could hope for in a 5 star hotel. I could have stayed in a robe with my coffee on the balcony all morning if there wasn’t so much near by - the location is perfect, just steps to restaurants and places to explore (the front desk gave great recommendations!) and the hospitality went above & beyond. Without a doubt, I’ll look forward to staying here again next time I visit Alicante!”

“I am really shocked that this is a 5 star hotel - it is more like a 3. The hotel itself is extremely old, tired and run down. It does not have a premium 5-star feel. The rooftop in particular was abysmal, with deckchairs that were extremely old, rusted and completely sagged in the middle. Plastic chairs and no atmosphere or music. It majorly needs an upgrade. The sad excuse for a gym was the size of a closet and had no mirror or space for mat workouts. Our room was extremely dark, facing into the corridor above the restaurant. Genuinely couldn’t see the sky unless you left the hotel so we were always in darkness which was very dingy. The bathroom was extremely old and dated - stains in the bathrub, rust in the bathtub, bathtub didn’t drain (so gross) and EXTREMELY poor shower pressure. A nice bathroom and shower experience is one of the most common 5 star hotel luxuries, and this genuinely felt like a hostel. No wardrobe or storage space in the bedroom made it really challenging to unpack. No mugs for tea in the bedroom either. We told them multiple times before booking and upon arrival that we were staying here for our wedding and even gave them my wedding dress and my husbands suit to tailor. Not even one congratulations card or acknowledgement of this. I’m not asking for or expecting free things, but a simple gesture to make the stay feel a bit special would be nice from a 5 star hotel. We have stayed at 3 & 4 star hotels that leave petals, gifts and cards for just anniversaries! Very odd. Breakfast is ok. The ordering system is slightly convoluted and would be better if they just had a larger breakfast area with the menu items such as mushrooms, smoked salmon etc available to take easily without waiting for the order. The stars it gets for the excellent location, but I would never ever stay here again and am genuinely so disappointed in the experience. and no we didn’t complain during the stay because we had spent hours unpacking and couldn’t waste time moving rooms.”

“Everything was perfect, from the friendliness at the front desk to the comfort of the room and the location. We truly enjoyed a great, relaxing stay. As a minor suggestion, it would be great if the lobby could be kept a bit cooler.”

“We had a wonderful stay at Hospes Amérigo. The hotel combines beautiful design, comfort, and excellent service in a perfect location right in the heart of Alicante. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, the rooms were stylish and spotless, and the rooftop terrace with the spa area was a real highlight. Everything felt very relaxing and high quality. We would definitely come back and highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Alicante.”
