Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews
Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 26 September 2026 · How we review hotels
Abaton Island suits couples and families who want their own pool or hot tub without leaving the resort. Every room has one, the beach is private, and five restaurants cover the week. The scale is large rather than intimate, the beachfront gets busy in high season, and the wifi does not reach every corner.
Guests score it 9.0 out of 10 — the average across the 53 hotels we list on Crete is 9.1.

What Guests Loved
- Nearly every accommodation category includes a private plunge pool, outdoor hot tub, or terrace, giving guests a sense of seclusion rarely found at large-scale resorts.
- Guests can walk straight from their room to a dedicated private beach area, avoiding the crowds often found on public stretches nearby Hersonissos.
Things to Consider
- With multiple pools, venues, and expansive grounds, the property leans toward a full-scale resort experience rather than a boutique or intimate retreat.
- During peak summer months, the private beach and pool areas may see higher occupancy, so early risers often secure the best loungers.
Should you book it?

Reviews from Google“What a wonderful hotel and well worth 5 stars. The staff were fantastic and we had a great room with a sea view. The restaurants were very good, although unfortunately we didn't get a chance to visit the steak restaurant. Perhaps next time. Facilities were very good i.e. pools, places to sit and relax, etc. There's not much immediately around the hotel but Hersonissos and Malia are a short bus ride away. Malia was the better site as it was less touristy. Old Hersonissos was good with a few nice restaurants. Bus into Heraklion was OK and the archaeological museum there was fantastic. Didn't get a chance to visit Knossos but hear that is well worth a visit. The Abaton hotel is highly recommended.”
“Absolutely amazing, the whole experience, from being taken by a nice golf cart ride straight to the restaurant, to the lovely lady who has greeted me as soon as I stepped out of the go-cart, to the great service provided, especially by Valentina, and the amazing food, awesome food, thanks a lot to the chefs! The views and atmosphere are 11 out of 10 to say the least.”
“Highly recommended, beautiful and especially good because of: -cleanliness (rooms outstanding!), -friendliness of staff (Nikos and Mikail from Buddha Bar as well as the ladies, Agni from Elemes, Aurelia and her colleagues from Guest relation and the reception) -food and drinks and of course design and music (for me one of the best reasons to come back) personal services I'm planning to come back for Yoga retreats! Thanks a lot to the incredible Management and staff!”
“The hotel was amazing , total white with minimal tones everywhere in every point . The restaurants especially the elemes (Cretan restaurant) was so tasty, a menu with traditional plates. The room was big enough and comfortable for 2-3 people !!!! We are gonna be back soon , we’ll miss you !”
“This hotel’s true value is nowhere near what they charge a night. It is in fact much much lower. You as a customer pay nearly $1000 a night plus more for half board if you so choose and yet the power General manager is a pompous know it all who doesn’t respect his clientele. - power goes out repeatedly during the night. And the room makes countless noises to disturb sleep while power turns back on. And of course AC doesn’t turn back on. - —-no warnings of power outages or any guidance as to when they would stop. - — dangerous when power is out when in shower. No natural light. Slip hazard - Pay $60 per person for half board but water not included. When you bring your own water to restaurants you get scolded at and told to put the water away. This is not the case in many areas in Europe. - Ants in room. Took 24 hrs for them to finally react to our claim. - Pools at the hotel are so cold and unusable especially if you shell out the higher cost for a pool with a room. NOT WORTH IT. - Definitely not worth the high prices.”
