Noonu, Raa and Lhaviyani: the most secluded addresses in the country, Cheval Blanc Randheli, Soneva Jani, JOALI and the adults-only Kudadoo among them. Seaplane transfers of 40–60 minutes and the fewest other boats on the water.
The classic atoll: 15–45 minutes by speedboat from the airport, with One&Only Reethi Rah, Gili Lankanfushi and the Fari Islands. The widest choice and the easiest arrival; also the busiest waters and the most seaplanes overhead.
A UNESCO biosphere reserve with the country's most storied islands: Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Amilla, Vakkaru. Manta rays at Hanifaru Bay from June to November. Seaplane only, and the highest prices.
Speedboat distance from the airport with fewer neighbours: COMO Cocoa Island, the Waldorf Astoria's Ithaafushi and Anantara's twin islands. Good surf breaks and quieter lagoons; a smaller choice than the north.
Whale sharks year-round and the widest spread of resorts, from Conrad Rangali's underwater restaurant to Constance Halaveli and W Maldives. Seaplane or domestic flight; strong for divers and for all-inclusive value.
Dhaalu, Thaa and Laamu: St. Regis Vommuli, Niyama, COMO Maalifushi and Six Senses Laamu, with the best surf and the healthiest reefs. Domestic flight plus boat, so a longer arrival; worth it for divers, surfers and anyone allergic to crowds.
