Luxury Hotels in the Maldives

The Maldives is the one-island, one-resort destination: 1,200 coral islands in 26 atolls, of which around 170 hold a single hotel each.

In short: Stay at Soneva Fushi in Baa Atoll for the original barefoot-luxury island, One&Only Reethi Rah in North Malé Atoll for the widest choice of villas within speedboat reach, and Cheval Blanc Randheli in Noonu Atoll for the most polished service in the country. Families do best at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa; divers at Six Senses Laamu.

Maldives: which destination suits you?

Not every place suits every trip. Here is how the destinations differ, with the hotels we list in each and the guides that narrow the choice further.

Islands6

Northern Atolls

Northern Atolls

9 hotels

Noonu, Raa and Lhaviyani: the most secluded addresses in the country, Cheval Blanc Randheli, Soneva Jani, JOALI and the adults-only Kudadoo among them. Seaplane transfers of 40–60 minutes and the fewest other boats on the water.

North Malé Atoll

North Malé Atoll

8 hotels

The classic atoll: 15–45 minutes by speedboat from the airport, with One&Only Reethi Rah, Gili Lankanfushi and the Fari Islands. The widest choice and the easiest arrival; also the busiest waters and the most seaplanes overhead.

Baa Atoll

Baa Atoll

6 hotels

A UNESCO biosphere reserve with the country's most storied islands: Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Amilla, Vakkaru. Manta rays at Hanifaru Bay from June to November. Seaplane only, and the highest prices.

South Malé Atoll

South Malé Atoll

5 hotels

Speedboat distance from the airport with fewer neighbours: COMO Cocoa Island, the Waldorf Astoria's Ithaafushi and Anantara's twin islands. Good surf breaks and quieter lagoons; a smaller choice than the north.

Ari Atoll

Ari Atoll

4 hotels

Whale sharks year-round and the widest spread of resorts, from Conrad Rangali's underwater restaurant to Constance Halaveli and W Maldives. Seaplane or domestic flight; strong for divers and for all-inclusive value.

Southern Atolls

Southern Atolls

4 hotels

Dhaalu, Thaa and Laamu: St. Regis Vommuli, Niyama, COMO Maalifushi and Six Senses Laamu, with the best surf and the healthiest reefs. Domestic flight plus boat, so a longer arrival; worth it for divers, surfers and anyone allergic to crowds.

Frequently Asked Questions

North and South Malé Atoll are 15–45 minutes by speedboat from the airport and hold the most resorts, including One&Only Reethi Rah and Gili Lankanfushi. Baa Atoll is a UNESCO biosphere reserve with Soneva Fushi and Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, reached by seaplane in 35 minutes. Ari Atoll has whale sharks year-round. The further north or south you go, the quieter and more expensive the transfer.

The dry season from November to April brings calm seas and the clearest water; December to March is peak, with the highest prices. May to October is the wet season with short heavy showers, better surf and lower rates. Manta rays gather in Baa Atoll from June to November.

Yes, at the right resort. Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, Soneva Fushi, Gili Lankanfushi and Kuramathi all run kids' clubs and have shallow lagoons. Adults-only islands include Kudadoo, Naladhu and the Waldorf Astoria's Ithaafushi private island. Every resort states its policy; we list it on each hotel page.

Resorts near Malé use speedboats, included or charged per person. Anything beyond about 60 kilometres needs a seaplane, which flies only in daylight and costs roughly USD 400–700 per person return; a few atolls use domestic flights plus a boat. Book flights that land before mid-afternoon or plan an airport hotel night.

Often yes: you cannot leave the island to eat, and à la carte dinners at top resorts run USD 150–300 per person. Half-board or full-board plans are common, and several resorts (Lily Beach, Sun Siyam) offer genuine premium all-inclusive. We note the board basis on each hotel page.

We include five-star resorts, or the equivalent international premium standing, with guest scores that hold up over time, and we rank them on real guest reviews rather than brand. Each hotel page shows the atoll, transfer type, guest score and honest pros and cons.
