Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews
Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 4 October 2026 · How we review hotels
Opus XVI suits travellers who want character and a central address in equal measure. The hotel fills an 1876 building a few minutes' walk from Bryggen and the Fish Market, and the Grieg theme, the art in the lobby and the elegant bar and restaurant give it a distinct sense of place. Guests speak warmly about the kind, attentive staff, the comfortable beds and a breakfast buffet built on good ingredients, and the Saturday afternoon tea adds a reason to linger. The old building comes with compromises. Rooms vary in size, and some of the entry categories feel small or narrow, sometimes with a view across the courtyard. Weekends on the square can be loud, and a few guests found the breakfast repetitive over several days or dinner service slow. Couples who book a larger room will find a refined, convenient base for Bergen; anyone who wants generous space on a modest budget may be happier elsewhere.
Guests score it 9.0 out of 10 — the average across the 4 hotels we list in Bergen is 8.9.
What Guests Loved
- Location is what guests mention most. Bryggen, the Fish Market, shops, bars and restaurants are all a few minutes away on foot, and the station is 700 metres from the hotel.
- The 1876 building, its architecture and the sophisticated interiors make a strong impression, and guests describe the bar and the restaurant as beautiful rooms in their own right.
Things to Consider
- The rooms vary in size. Several guests found theirs smaller than expected, and in one case too narrow to open a suitcase comfortably, while other rooms in the hotel are noticeably larger. Some rooms look onto the inner courtyard rather than the street.
- The central square is lively, and a few guests heard a lot of noise outside at night, especially at weekends. In the old building, getting from room to street can also involve both stairs and a lift.
Should you book it?
Opus XVI is worth booking for couples on a city break who want Bryggen on foot — but pick somewhere else if you need a spacious room at an entry-level rate.
