Oslo

Oslo

6 hotels

Oslo is Norway's city break: grand hotels by Karl Johan, art and design on the Oslofjord at Tjuvholmen, and forest trails a metro ride above town. Choose it for culture, food and a long weekend; Bergen is the rainy harbour town by the western fjords, while the single hotels in Trondheim, Voss, Lofoten, Svalbard and Kolbotn are each about one kind of stay, from a historic grand hotel to mountains, Arctic nature or a large spa resort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oslo is the capital break, with grand hotels around Karl Johan, design by the fjord at Tjuvholmen and the forests of Nordmarka a metro ride away. Bergen is compact and rainy, ideal on foot and as the start or end of a fjord trip. For nature, Voss sits in fjord and mountain country, Lofoten offers fishing villages beneath steep peaks, and Svalbard is the high Arctic. Kolbotn suits a spa weekend without a long journey.

Late spring and summer bring long, light evenings and the best conditions for fjords and hiking; north of the Arctic Circle, on Lofoten and Svalbard, the midnight sun lasts for weeks around midsummer. From autumn to early spring, dark, clear nights give a chance of the northern lights in the north. Winter days are short, but there is skiing close to Oslo and around Voss. Pack warm layers and rain gear whatever the season.

Oslo Airport Gardermoen is the main international gateway, and Bergen and Trondheim also have international routes. Domestic flights link the cities with northern Norway and Svalbard, and Lofoten is reached by flying to one of the local airports or by ferry from Bodø. The Bergen Railway between Oslo and Bergen stops at Voss and is a classic journey in its own right. In the cities, trains, trams and buses make a car unnecessary.

Five single hotels outside Oslo and Bergen also feature here. Britannia Hotel is a grand hotel from 1870 in central Trondheim, near Nidaros Cathedral. Elva Hotel is a design hotel by the water at Voss, a little over an hour by train from Bergen. Henningsvær Bryggehotell sits on the harbour of a Lofoten fishing village, Funken Lodge is an Arctic lodge in Longyearbyen, and The Well is a forest spa hotel at Kolbotn, about 14 km south of Oslo.

Norway uses the Norwegian krone (NOK). Cards and mobile payments are accepted almost everywhere, and many places hardly handle cash any more. Service is included in prices, so tipping is not expected; rounding up or leaving a little extra for good service in a restaurant is appreciated, but it is entirely up to you.

Many of the hotels are rooted in their place: grand hotels that have been meeting points for generations, old buildings such as Bergen's former stock exchange turned into hotels, and new architecture designed around views of fjord or forest. Saunas, pools and cold plunges are part of the spa culture, breakfast is taken seriously, often with local produce, and the service tends to be informal, warm and unfussy rather than ceremonious.
