Lithographs by Edvard Munch hang in the lobby lounge. The hotel has five restaurants, among them Eik Annen Etage for fine dining and Theatercaféen, the historic café that has been a meeting place in Oslo for more than 100 years, while Bar Boman serves drinks and lighter dishes. Breakfast is served in its own dining room. A free gym is open around the clock, and there is room service, a 24-hour front desk, free Wi-Fi and private parking.

Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews

Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 2 October 2026 · How we review hotels

Hotel Continental is for guests who want old-school polish in the middle of Oslo. The National Theatre is across the street, Karl Johan is a short stroll away and the Royal Palace, the harbour and most sights in the centre can be reached on foot. Inside, Munch lithographs in the lounge, individually decorated rooms and Theatercaféen give the house a sense of history. Guests talk most about the staff, who are described as warm and attentive, and about a breakfast served in its own dining room. The classic style also has its limits. Some rooms are on the small side or feel a little dated, and rooms at the back can pick up noise from a nearby club late at night. There is no pool or spa, and the gym is modest. Travellers who want a central base with attentive service will feel well looked after; anyone after a wellness hotel should look elsewhere.

A classic grand hotel opposite the National Theatre, with Theatercaféen on the ground floor, Munch lithographs in the lounge and a breakfast guests rave about. It suits travellers who want to walk everywhere in the centre and value attentive service, less so anyone looking for a pool or spa.

Guests score it 9.1 out of 10 — the average across the 6 hotels we list in Oslo is 8.9.

  • Guests mention the location more than anything else: the National Theatre is across the street, Karl Johan is 150 metres away and the Royal Palace, the harbour ferries, restaurants and sights are all within walking distance.
  • Staff are described as friendly, courteous and genuinely attentive, from the front desk to the breakfast room, and several guests were upgraded on arrival without asking.
