Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten is for travellers who want the traditions of a classic grand hotel in the very centre of Hamburg. It stands on the Alster, a few minutes on foot from the Jungfernstieg and the State Opera, and guests return again and again to the same points: the location, the attentive staff and the historic building with its wide central staircase. The dining is a reason to stay in itself, with Haerlin's two Michelin stars, Nikkei Nine and afternoon cakes in Café Condi, and the bar is a favourite. The main gap is the lack of a pool, which some guests did not expect at this level. A few bathrooms and showers are compact, the bar can get busy in the evening, and views vary from room to room. For a city stay built around good food, service and an address on the water, it is hard to fault; anyone who wants to swim should look elsewhere.
