Berlin

11 hotels

Berlin is the big, spread-out capital: major museums, history from the Brandenburg Gate to Checkpoint Charlie and neighbourhoods that each feel like a town of their own. It suits first-time visitors, culture lovers and night owls, where Munich offers a compact old town with the Alps within reach and Hamburg a city shaped by its harbour and the Alster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Berlin is the big, spread-out capital of museums, history and nightlife. Munich has a compact old town you cross on foot, with beer gardens and the Alps within reach. Hamburg is shaped by the Alster lakes, the Elbe and the harbour. To add a few quiet nights, choose Baden-Baden or the Tegernsee for spa days, Berchtesgaden for the mountains or Sylt for the North Sea.

From late spring to early autumn the days are long, the beer gardens are open and the Bavarian lakes are warm enough for a swim; it is also high season on Sylt. In December the Christmas markets draw visitors, in Dresden for instance the long-standing Striezelmarkt. Winter suits Berchtesgaden for skiing and spa days. Rates rise during Oktoberfest in Munich, the big trade fairs and school holidays, so book early if your dates are fixed.

From the UK there are flights to Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt, and the train via Brussels is an option for Cologne and Frankfurt. Fast ICE trains link the big cities, and public transport covers the centres well. For Berchtesgaden, the Tegernsee and Kronberg a car is handy. Sylt is reached by plane, by train across the Hindenburgdamm causeway or, with your own car, on the car train from Niebüll.

They are standalone hotels that justify the trip on their own: a grand spa hotel on the Lichtentaler Allee in Baden-Baden, an alpine resort with a gourmet restaurant above Berchtesgaden, a lakeside hotel on the Tegernsee, a baroque palace opposite the Zwinger in Dresden, a golf and spa hotel on Sylt and a castle in the Taunus hills. The Tegernsee and Berchtesgaden pair easily with Munich, Dresden with Berlin, Sylt with Hamburg, and Baden-Baden and Kronberg with Frankfurt.

Germany uses the euro. Cards are accepted in hotels and most restaurants, but cash is still more common than in the UK, so keep some to hand for bakeries, beer gardens and taxis. In restaurants service is included, yet it is customary to round up or add around five to ten per cent – tell the waiter the total when you pay rather than leaving money on the table.

Many are grand hotels with long traditions, some still privately owned, while others occupy unusual buildings – from a former embassy and baroque palaces to a porcelain manufactory. Spa culture runs deep, and saunas are usually used without swimwear, often in mixed areas. Several hotel restaurants hold Michelin stars, and service tends to be precise and formal rather than chatty.
