Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews
Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 3 October 2026 · How we review hotels
Britannia Hotel is for travellers who want a classic grand hotel in the middle of Trondheim. The building dates from 1870, Nidaros Cathedral and the station are a short walk away, and the rooms pair traditional décor with modern comfort and very good beds. Guests speak most warmly about the staff, who are described as attentive at every turn, and about a breakfast that many count among the reasons to return. The spa, with its pool, mineral pool and saunas, rounds off the stay. The extras are where the costs add up. The spa and pool are charged separately, the wine bar is expensive and tables in the bar may need booking, and at weekends breakfast can be crowded. Couples who are happy to pay for the spa and plan their evenings will find a polished, memorable base in Trondheim; anyone wanting everything included in the rate may prefer a simpler hotel.
What Guests Loved
- Guests walk to all the main sights from the hotel. Nidaros Cathedral is 500 metres away, the central station about five minutes on foot and the cruise terminal a little further, with shops and restaurants on the doorstep.
- Staff are the most praised part of a stay, from the doorman and reception to the bar and the breakfast room. Guests mention small gestures such as a packed breakfast prepared for an early departure to the airport.
Things to Consider
- Access to the spa and pool is charged on top of the room rate; only the gym is included. One guest also found some spa facilities out of order without having been told in advance.
- Breakfast is much loved, which makes it busy. At weekends some guests met long queues, for example at the egg station, and found the room hectic.
Should you book it?
Britannia Hotel is worth booking for couples who want classic luxury and a spa in the city centre — but pick somewhere else if you expect spa and pool access to be included.
