Estonia: which destination suits you?

Tallinn

Tallinn

10 hotels

Tallinn is a compact city break: a walled medieval Old Town with small luxury hotels in centuries-old houses, and modern towers with pools and views just outside the walls. It suits a long weekend for two, a winter break built around a sauna or a short hop by ferry from Helsinki or Stockholm.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Old Town is the place for atmosphere: small hotels in medieval houses, the lanes and Town Hall Square on the doorstep and Toompea a short climb away. The trade-off is stairs, compact rooms and no car access. The city centre around Viru, Freedom Square and Lembitu Park offers lifts, pools, gyms and taxis to the door, with the Old Town ten to fifteen minutes away on foot.

Summer is the brightest season, with white nights around midsummer, open terraces, walks along the seafront and day trips to the coast, though Tallinn's Old Town gets busy when cruise ships call. The Christmas market fills Town Hall Square from late November into the new year. Winter days are short, dark and often snowy, which is when a hotel pool and sauna come into their own. Spring and early autumn are calmer.

Ferries from Helsinki cross the Gulf of Finland in around two hours and run many times a day, while ships from Stockholm sail overnight. Both arrive at the harbour, a short walk or taxi ride from the Old Town. Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport has direct flights from many European cities and lies only a few kilometres from the centre, so the transfer is quick. Central Tallinn is compact and easy to explore on foot or by tram.

Estonia uses the euro, and cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere, including in small cafés and taxis. Tipping is not obligatory. In restaurants, leaving around ten per cent or rounding up for good service is a common courtesy, while in hotels a small tip for porters or housekeeping is appreciated but never expected. Check your bill first, as some restaurants add a service charge.

Their character comes from history and scale. Many occupy centuries-old merchant houses with thick stone walls, beamed ceilings and antique furniture, so rooms vary and often feel more like a private house than a chain hotel. Service tends to be personal, breakfasts are generous and a sauna is almost standard. Just outside the walls, the modern towers trade that character for space, pools and views over the rooftops to the sea.

Not yet. For now we compare luxury hotels in Tallinn only. Beyond the capital, Pärnu is a classic summer resort on the west coast, Tartu a lively university town, Lahemaa National Park stretches along the coast east of Tallinn, and the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa lie off the west coast. Lahemaa is an easy day trip from the city, so Tallinn makes a sensible base for a first look at the country.
