Two historic villas stand in a large park on the hillside above Lavagna, between Portofino and the Cinque Terre, with just 15 rooms, an infinity pool facing the gulf and an outdoor spa among olive trees. Guests keep returning to the views, the spacious, carefully designed rooms and a team that treats them like house guests, and dinner and breakfast are often singled out. The trade-off is the climb. The road up is narrow and winding, several guests found the drive and the parking stressful, and the centre of Lavagna is about ten minutes away by car, so nothing is on foot.
