Areas drawn from our hotels' addresses — updated as the selection changes.
San Marco & Cannaregio
Best for First-time visitorsThe historical heart of Venice, home to St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and the bustling Rialto district. This central area is perfect for exploring iconic landmarks, though it experiences heavy daytime foot traffic.
Castello
Best for A quieter central baseStretching east from St Mark's along the Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront, this historic district offers excellent lagoon views and easier access to the Biennale gardens. It retains a more residential feel once you venture away from the Grand Canal basin.
Dorsoduro & Santa Croce
Best for Art and local characterLocated across the Grand Canal, these districts host major art galleries, quieter canals, and authentic local squares. They provide a relaxed, culturally rich atmosphere away from the primary tourist thoroughfares.
Giudecca & Lagoon Islands
Best for Secluded resort-style staysThese island sanctuaries in the Venetian Lagoon offer expansive grounds, luxury spas, and panoramic views back towards the historic centre. Guests rely on private shuttle boats to reach the main sights of Venice.
Areas to consider
While the private lagoon islands offer serene retreats, they are less convenient for travellers wishing to step directly out of their hotel into Venice's historic streets.

Every hotel counts once, at its own typical price, so hotels we happened to check more often don't carry more weight. Prices are the lowest rate available for the whole stay, worked out per night in euros.

How we chose these hotels
At our latest review (August 2026) the properties listed above were measured against the same standard: sustained guest scores on both Booking.com and Google — weighted by how many reviews sit behind them — five-star class or an equivalent premium level, a genuinely first-rate location, and facilities that set the hotel apart.
As a guideline we look for around 8.5 or higher on Booking.com, but no single number decides on its own — when the sources disagree, the broader evidence wins. Guest scores on this page update continuously, and the selection is re-reviewed at regular intervals. The full standard is described in how we choose hotels.
