The world metropolis of London naturally hosts a considerable number of hotels. Statistics say that there are about 1500 hotels and over 120 000 hotel rooms! Some of these hotels are of the traditional cut for travellers on a medium budget. Others offer ultimate luxury!
Then there are hotel rooms located in hotels with a more crazy, weird or just different character. In these hotels we offer our guests surprises, for example in terms of design, theme or location. A night in a hotel with a difference can be an experience in itself! Here’s a selection of 10 crazy, weird and unusual hotels in London.
Table of contents
The Exhibitionist Hotel – South Kensington
The five-star The Exhibitionist Hotel in South Kensington stands out in many ways. The owner advertises the hotel as an “amazing art boutique hotel” and that’s no exaggeration. Art and design really take centre stage and all rooms have a distinctly distinctive design (often with lots of colour!).
At The Exhibitionist Hotel there are many different types of rooms, from more “ordinary” double rooms to rooms designed from floor to ceiling. Trash City Suite Room – could it be something? Or would you rather take in the Drop Dead Gorgeous Splash Suite Room?
Good Hotel – The Docklands
The Good Hotel London has several specialities that are not directly related to the hotel itself. Firstly, the hotel is located on the water. Yes, the whole building floats on the quay. Secondly, the hotel is non-profit. Profits from the hotel go to vulnerable children. That alone makes this hotel different!
Good Hotel has a modern and uncluttered design that will appeal to most Scandinavians. There are many different rooms to choose from and the hotel has a restaurant, café and bar. A bonus is the rooftop terrace with its outdoor seating area. From here you have a nice view of the city.
Batty Langley’s – Shoreditch
Sometimes you want to be safe and seek familiar arms. Other times you flirt with your deeper desires and choose to go outside the box. So it can be with hotels, and Batty Langley’s in Shoreditch is one where your imagination runs wild.
Betty Langley’s offers beautiful rooms where velvet and silk take up a lot of space. All rooms are decorated with floor-to-ceiling details and are elegantly furnished. Breakfast can be served in the room and room service is available 24 hours a day. At Betty Langley’s you’ll feel like royalty!
Shangri-La The Shard
London boasts some of the most classic and famous hotels in the world. A few years ago, the city received an addition to its collection. It is about the hotel Shangri-La. Occupying floors 34 to 52 of The Shard skyscraper, the hotel offers guests a hotel experience beyond the ordinary.
The view from the rooms, the view from the infinity pool on the top floor, the view from the restaurant – several hundred metres up you have a fantastic view of London and its surroundings. Beyond the view, Shangri-La is different in that guests can book all sorts of luxuries. The crowning glory is perhaps the suites with their own private butler.
The Mandrake – Westminster
If money is less of an issue but you’d like to do more than just sleep, then The Mandrake in Westminster could be an exciting choice. This hotel is like no other and it’s hard to beat the luxury. The Mandrake is many things in one, such as an art gallery and a courtyard garden.
The Mandrake also has a bar that is something special with DJs several days a week and a restaurant with a Latin American touch. With only 34 rooms and high demand, be sure to book early! Rooms can be booked via Hotels.com and with a good Hotels.com discount code from us you can get an extra good price.
ZSL London Zoo Lodges
London Zoo with its nearly 800 different species is well worth a visit. There is also something as unusual as small cottages that you can rent for a night or two. The cabins are located inside the Land of the Lions exhibition itself, so when you lay your head on the pillow, you’re not many metres from the nearest lion!
To make the most of both a visit to the zoo and an overnight stay, various packages are available. This includes, for example, exclusive tours of parts of the park, food packages and a buffet breakfast.
The Standard – King’s Cross
The Standard has to be considered one of the coolest hotels not only in London but in the whole of the UK. The architecture is something special and there is a majestic variety of rooms and suites. There is not much that is just standard about this hotel!
However, The Standard is not just hotel rooms. It has a large library, a radio station and several bars and restaurants that attract not only hotel guests but also out-of-towners. The Decimo restaurant is a highlight and this restaurant can actually only be reached via the red elevator that runs on the outside of the building.
St Christopher’s Inn Village – London Bridge
In Japan, they’ve been around for years, but we Europeans haven’t really jumped on the trend. It is, of course, about capsule hotels. Whether capsule hotels are crazy, weird or different is up to you to decide, but it probably feels a bit strange to crawl into a plastic cocoon next to a bunch of other people? If you want to try the trend, St Christopher’s Inn Village is available.
A major advantage of St Christopher’s Inn Village is its location. It’s not far to anything in the very centre of London. Another advantage of this slightly crazy hotel is the price – it’s not very expensive here! As the name suggests, there is also a restaurant and bar to explore.
Courthouse Hotel
Once upon a time, the building that houses the Courthouse Hotel was a courthouse with prison cells. There are many famous people who have stood before the court here, such as Mick Jagger and Oscar Wilde. Of course, every hotelier with style makes sure to listen to history and this is also the case for the Courthouse Hotel. For example, three prison cells remain and now function as part of the bar.
Another example of how history still reverberates is that the restaurant is located in the former courtroom. For a little extra history, you can book the suite located in what used to be the judges’ room. Should you wish to book a night or two at the Courthouse Hotel, you can do so via Agoda. Kimpton Fitzroy – Bloomsbury
If anything that is beautiful can be considered different and qualify for this list, then Kimpton Fitzroy London must be included. That the hotel is a gem in terms of beauty is certainly reflected in the guest ratings on the hotel and booking sites. Set in a historic building with stunning architecture, the lobby is sure to amaze. 19th century beauty meets modern London – that’s the hotel’s slogan!
The five-star Kimpton Fitzroy is located in Russell Square. There are 334 rooms of the more luxurious variety and guests need not go hungry or thirsty thanks to the hotel’s several restaurants and bars.
